After vegan Olympic medalist Dotsie Bausch’s yearslong campaign to push Starbucks to drop their upcharge, evidence-based nonprofit Switch4Good turned its sights towards other global coffee chains. Just weeks later, Tim Hortons and Dunkin’ followed suit.
LOS ANGELES — Following corporate outreach, street activism, and advocating for the moral urgency to eliminate surcharges for non-dairy milk, evidence-based nonprofit Switch4Good has once more nudged another global coffee chain to drop its non-dairy milk upcharge. Inspire Brands has informed Switch4Good executive director Dotsie Bausch that beginning March 5, 2025, Dunkin’ will join Starbucks, Dutch Bros, and Tim Hortons as the latest coffee giant to drop its non-dairy milk surcharge.
Once Starbucks relented following a yearslong campaign helmed by Bausch, a vegan Olympic medalist, Switch4Good turned to Tim Hortons, Dunkin’, and other major coffee chains as its next targets. Following Bausch’s corporate outreach to Inspire Brands and Dunkin’ leaders, Switch4Good was declared victorious in taking down yet another coffee industry behemoth in less than a six-month span.
“The power to affect change will always reside with the consumer, and we will never stop advocating for those who are unfairly penalized for being lactose intolerant, having cultural beliefs that refrain from consuming cow’s milk, or for maintaining a vegan diet,” Dotsie Bausch, the founder and executive director of Switch4Good, said. “We are relentless in our pursuit of justice for BIPOC consumers who have been unfairly targeted through policies that are based on principles of dietary racism. This decision proves the impact that an organization like Switch4Good can have in catalyzing an entire supporter base, inspiring other advocates, and tackling giant corporations of all sizes. Until the very last coffee chain removes their non-dairy surcharge, we will continue our indefatigable fight for the animals, the people, and the planet.”
The Impact of Dunkins’ Decision
Until now, Dunkin’ customers throughout the U.S. have been forced to pay a dollar or more (USD) for non-dairy milk for drinks like lattes and cappuccinos in some Dunkin locations.
The Dunkin’ decision follows other coffee chains that have announced in rapid succession their intention to drop the non-dairy surcharge as a direct result of Switch4Good corporate outreach and campaigning, including Starbucks, Dutch Bros, Gregorys Coffee, and Tim Hortons. On the heels of fellow coffee giant Starbucks’ momentous decision to drop their surcharge on plant milk in the U.S. and Canada, the news adds Dunkin’ to the list of coffee leaders finally acknowledging the inherent dietary racism in policies that penalize drinkers of non-dairy milk.
