After vegan Olympic medalist Dotsie Bausch’s yearslong campaign to push Starbucks to drop their upcharge, evidence-based nonprofit Switch4Good turned its sights towards Tim Hortons. Just weeks later — and after multiple conversations with RBI — Tim Hortons followed suit.

LOS ANGELES — Evidence-based nonprofit Switch4Good has once again tipped the scales and pushed a global coffee chain to drop its non-dairy milk upcharge. Restaurant Brands International’s Head of Global Sustainability, Paul Yang, personally informed Switch4Good executive director Dotsie Bausch that beginning February 2025, Tim Hortons will join Starbucks as the latest coffee giant to drop its non-dairy milk upcharge in its U.S. coffee shops.

Once Starbucks relented following a yearslong campaign helmed by Bausch, a vegan Olympic medalist, Switch4Good turned to Tim Hortons as its next target. Following Bausch’s personal meeting with Yang, Switch4Good was declared victorious in taking down yet another coffee industry behemoth.

“We have once again proven our might,” Dotsie Bausch, the founder and executive director of Switch4Good, said. “No matter how massive a coffee company may be, we have once again shown that we will not back down in the fight for dietary justice. The collective global will of customers is finally being acknowledged: we will no longer support coffee companies who charge a financial penalty for lactose intolerance, a preference for plant-based milk, or cultural belief in abstaining from cow’s milk.”

The Impact of Tim Hortons’ Decision

Though their reputation is primarily that of a popular Canadian coffee chain, Tim Hortons operates locations throughout nearly one-third of the U.S., including more than 140 cities in New York state alone. Until now, customers throughout the U.S. were forced to pay upwards of a dollar (USD) for non-dairy milk for drinks like lattes and cappuccinos.

The move, which comes on the heels of Starbucks’ momentous decision to drop the upcharge on plant milk in the U.S. and Canada, adds Tim Hortons to the list of coffee leaders finally acknowledging the inherent dietary racism in policies that penalize drinkers of non-dairy milk.
