Apr 20, 2022
Watch Episode 174 with Vikas Garg:
Today’s guest is Vikas Garg, the creator and founder of the app abillion, which helps users all over the world create a more sustainable and vegan future. The app allows people to find and review vegan-friendly foods and products no matter where they are. In addition to turning folks plant-based and introducing them to veganism, the app supports vegan animal sanctuaries in real time. Vikas talks to us about how this app is creating positive change through large and powerful ripple effects that start off small.
Vikas was born in India but came to the USA at a young age and puts the “humane myth” about cows used by the food industry to rest for those who are curious about how cows are treated in both countries. He explains to us that although cows are viewed differently in both countries, they suffer the same cruel fates whether they are used by the dairy or meat industries in both places.
Vikas is passionate and about creating a more conscious, compassionate world. His episode today will take you into a deeper understand of how the world is changing through one app, and how we personally can change the world in a meaningful way as individuals and with our time spent on social media.

[Tweet “If you look at people around the world, the average American spends 3 hours a day on social media. Mindfulness for me, and mindful scrolling, is about seeing how can we take some of that time and actually use it to create awareness around positive habits. How do we reinforce positive behaviors? How can we help people feel like they are part of a community? We want to entertain people but help them do it in a way that helps enable them to make positive choices for the planet, animals, themselves, and their communities.”– Vikas Garg]

A plant-based diet has so many health benefits: reduced inflammation, a stronger immune system, and improved gut health, just to name a few. But can plant-based eating also have an impact on addiction and recovery? Could it prevent relapses and increase your resilience to cope with life? These are the questions that today’s guests, Dr. Tara Kemp and Adam Sud, set out to answer in The INFINITE Study, which researches if there are any benefits to plant-based eating in addiction recovery.
On a summer morning in 2001, today’s guest, Michael O’Brien, had what he refers to as his last bad day. While out on a morning bike ride, an SUV traveling at 40 mph crossed into his lane and struck him head-on, forever altering his life as he knew it. Doctors were shocked that he survived and told him that he’d likely never ride again or even walk with comfort. Yet, in 2022, Michael completed a 41-day, 3,600-mile bike ride across the United States, proving all of them wrong.
Today’s guests are on a mission to empower patients and accelerate change in the way medicine is practiced. They are husband and wife practitioners of functional and integrative medicine and experienced huge improvements in their own health by switching to a whole-food, plant-based diet. Dr. Micah Yu is an integrative rheumatologist and he has a unique perspective as both a physician and a patient because he was diagnosed with gout—a form of inflammatory arthritis that’s extremely painful—at the age of 17. Dr. Melissa Mondala is a triple specialist in family medicine, lifestyle medicine, and primary care psychiatry. She’s one of the first and youngest nationally recognized lifestyle medicine fellows and has devoted decades of volunteer work in underserved communities throughout the world.
